The simple 1st century Jewish apocalyptic gospel framework
What is all the hype about Jesus' resurrection in the in the first century?
Is the Kingdom of God already here? In Part? In Luke 17:20-37, Jesus describes how the kingdom of God will come: suddenly and apocalyptically, as in the day of Noah, like lightening from the east to the west. But how does this relate to the expectations of the Pharisees?
Jesus clearly confirms what the prophets spoke regarding the end of the age when his disciples asked, "...what will be the sign of your coming, and the end of the age?"
Paul's ministry was driven by both the love and the fear of God (cf. 2 Cor 5:10-21). But his knowledge of "the fear of the Lord" (v. 11) was attached to a commonly understood reality associated with the judgment seat of God (v. 10)--i.e., Gehenna. The bodily punishment of the wicked in the Valley of Hinnom was the dark side of Jewish apocalyptic thought that is often neglected today at both an academic and a popular level.
Paul's gospel was essentially twofold: Christ died for our sins (Rom 5:8; 1 Co 15:3), so that we can live forever (Rom 6:23; Tit 3:7). Both sacrificial atonement (propitiation, justification, reconciliation, etc) and Jewish eschatology (day of Christ, resurrection of the dead, immortality, etc) were gospel to Paul. Christ "gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age" (Gal 1:4). Anything else is a "different gospel" (v. 6).
The historical context of an often misunderstood parable.
The parable of the wineskins has a long history of allegorical interpretation (often quite anti-Semitic). But what if, like many other parables, Jesus is not speaking allegorically?
